Louisiana state Sen. Troy Brown fights back against resignation calls, apologizes for 'mistakes' involving domestic violenceDONALDSONVILLE — Facing two cases involving allegations of domestic abuse against women, two-term state Sen. Troy Brown on Friday rejected demands for his resignation and defended his ability to be an effective legislator, saying the calls for his departure were "chatter from political opportunists."
Though not naming anyone in particular, the written statement from Brown comes days after Gov. John Bel Edwards and New Orleans state Rep. Helena Moreno and state Sen. J.P. Morrell, all fellow Democrats, asked for Brown to resign in light of his two misdemeanor arrests since late November. The latest, in July, involves his wife.
Edwards said he did not think Brown, D-Geismar, could "continue to effectively serve his constituents" facing the allegations.
But Brown said in a statement Friday that while he is "deeply sorry" for the mistakes he has made, they are personal issues. He said he is facing his issue with anger management with the help of a family counselor.
