Kentucky lawmakers take break after contentious votes
Lawmakers left Frankfort on Thursday for a two-week break the morning after a flurry of major bills were passed, including one that would allow construction of nuclear power plants in Kentucky and another that would allow publicly funded charter schools to open.
Between the two, the charter schools measure proved the most controversial by far.
Lawmakers are scheduled to return to the Capitol on March 29 for the two final days of this year’s legislative session.
Working late into the night on Wednesday, the House and Senate opened the door to construction of nuclear power plants in Kentucky by lifting a longstanding moratorium. The proposal had been pushed for years by the legislative delegation from far western Kentucky, where thousands of workers have lost jobs in the closure of a uranium enrichment plant near Paducah.
