Bowling Green fairness ordinance fails to even get discussion

A long-sought Bowling Green fairness ordinance was finally presented at a city commission meeting but failed to even produce a discussion after a motion to approve it was not seconded, spurring chants of “shame, shame, shame” directed at commissioners from an overflow crowd of ordinance supporters.

A crowd of about 200 supporters filled the commission chambers, City Hall hallways and lawn for Tuesday’s city commission meeting. Commissioner Brian “Slim” Nash introduced a proposed amendment to the city’s existing code of ordinances regarding public accommodations. The amendment would extend discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

After Nash made a motion to approve the ordinance, Mayor Bruce Wilkerson and commissioners Joe Denning, Rick Williams and Sue Parrigin sat silently; with no second, the motion died and the brief meeting ended quickly. Nash asked that city staff place a discussion of the ordinance on the working agenda for the March 7 commission meeting.

Many supporters of the ordinance were unable to enter the commission chambers because of the size of the crowd, but their chants could be heard from outside City Hall during the meeting.
