10 Kentucky restaurants claim sanctuary status
It's not about politics for the owner of 13 Kentuckiana coffee shops.
Recent national conversations would have you think otherwise. But for Mike Mays, the president and co-owner of Heine Brothers' Coffee, giving his shops the title of "sanctuary restaurants" is more about creating a space where both sides can meet, rather than letting customers know which way his company leans.
"One of the mistakes we're making right now is we're not creating a space where we can be together with people who don't think exactly as we do," Mays said Tuesday. "We have to find a way to get out of our echo chambers and be around people who don't necessarily think exactly as we do."
The sanctuary restaurant movement, started by the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United and Presente.org, could be that way, Mays said.
