Louisville police union files lawsuit telling LMPD to fill promotional openings on time
Louisville's police union has filed a lawsuit against Metro Government over the Louisville Metro Police Department allegedly refusing to fill an open sergeant position in the time frame set in state law.
Kentucky law and local police rules mandate that promotional vacancies be filled within 60 days, but according to the lawsuit filed Friday in Jefferson Circuit Court, the department has said it won't fill promotional vacancies with promotions "for the indefinite future."
"The FOP will strongly defend the merit board rules, as laid out in state law, as well as all of our due process rights," said Nicolai Jilek, the union's president. "We are always willing to work with Metro Government to make sure things are done the correct way. We hope that we're ultimately able to resolve this."
Spokespeople for Louisville Metro Police and Mayor Greg Fischer's Office declined Friday to comment on the pending litigation.
