University of Louisville: Ramsey rich enough to pay his own court fees

The University of Louisville Foundation says it isn't legally required to pay former President James Ramsey's court costs in its lawsuit against him — and he is wealthy enough to pay for them until the case is resolved, anyway.

Ramsey is not entitled under state law or the foundation's bylaws to have his legal fees paid in advance, according to a court document filed by the university on Friday. In the document, U of L alleges Ramsey carried out his duties in bad faith.

Ramsey, who resigned from the university and foundation under pressure in 2016, claims the foundation should cover his legal expenses because the case is connected to his work there.

The foundation and the university sued Ramsey in Jefferson Circuit Court in April claiming that he and others mismanaged the school's endowment. Ramsey received approximately $8.75 million in deferred compensation alone from the foundation over time, according to the lawsuit.
