Bill changing work permits for children passes House over Democrats’ objections
Changes to Iowa law streamlining the work-permit process for children passed the state House this morning, but only after a lengthy debate on whether employers should be required to submit those permits to the state.
House File 2227 removes requirements currently in law requiring school officials to sign off on work permits for children between 10 and 16 years old, and allows the permitting process to be completed electronically. Those measures were not controversial.
But Democrats, led by Cedar Rapids Rep. Kirsten Running-Marquardt, objected to a line in the bill allowing employers to merely keep child work permits on file, rather than submitting them to Iowa Workforce Development, the state office that oversees child-labor issues.
The bill before us moves us one step forward by moving to a simplified, one-page, electronic child work permit, Running-Marquardt said. Then it takes us back 100 years by saying that the employer may or may not send in the electronic form and
could just put it in a drawer in their office without anyone at state level ever seeing it.
