Former board president of nonprofit pleads to thefts

CROWN POINT — John F. Kmetz, the former treasurer of two local nonprofit, pleaded guilty Friday to four counts of felony theft.

Kmetz, 80, admitted in his oral plea that he stole funds from the Hunky Hollow Athletic Club and Cerebral Palsy of Northwest Indiana.

Cerebral Palsy of Northwest Indiana is a nonprofit organization that operates the Center for Possibilities, 22 Tyler Street in Hobart. The center provides a day care and educational program for handicapped children and adults.

Police determined Kmetz withdrew almost $55,000 from three bank accounts owned by the two nonprofits between May 2011 and November 2015, but defense attorney Scott King claimed Friday “a significant amount” of those withdrawals were used for business purposes.
