Some skeptical as Democrats continue progressive tax push
Polls show most voters support the idea of a graduated income tax, but some taxpayers remain skeptical of changing the state's constitution as Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Democrats have proposed.
Democrats from each chamber of the state Legislature presented three options for the state's future at a recent news conference that aligned with Pritzker’s proposal: Deep cuts to state spending, income tax hikes for all or a tiered income tax structure that taxes wealthy people more.
“The critics want to protect multimillionaires who worry that their taxes might go up,” said state Sen. Don Harmon, D-Oak Park. “This would allow us to protect the middle class. Their concern for the middle class in my mind is feigned.”
Harmon has a measure to ask voters to change the state constitution's flat tax to a structure that taxes higher earners higher rates. If that measure passes both the Senate and House with a three-fifths vote, it would then have to be approved by three-fifths of voters.
