Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office to pay Dontrell Stephens $25M in settlement

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw has agreed to pay roughly $25 million to a West Palm Beach man who became a quadriplegic after a sheriff’s deputy shot him in 2012

The surprise settlement — by far the largest in the agency’s history — means 25-year-old Dontrell Stephens could eventually get the $22.4 million money a federal jury in 2016 said he deserved plus the interest that has accumulated since Bradshaw appealed the verdict.

But there is a catch — a big one.

While signing off on the settlement, Bradshaw said he won’t cut the eight-figure check until Stephens’ attorneys get the Florida Legislature to pass a claims bill. After the settlement was inked last week, Bradshaw immediately paid Stephens $200,000, the limit government agencies can be forced to pay for wrongdoing.
