Florida
Related: About this forumFloridians check in here if you are staying and then check back in after the storm.
Let's keep track of our extended DU Family.
Let us know if you are staying, where, and then let us know you're ok after it blows over. If you need help after the storm maybe we can use this to get the word out or to get help to you.
I'll be riding it out in Jacksonville, East of the river but west of the Intercoastal.
I'm sure after Sunday midday I'll be in the dark but will try to check back in on my cell but who knows if it may poop out or not. We've got food, water, batteries, and supplies to hunker down and ride it out.
Be safe DU'ers.

(1,353 posts)But from CO and here to help my Mom. We are headed to Kissimmee tomorrow to ride it out in a hotel suite. My sis flew down from Boston and we're hoping to get out from Orlando, with Mom in tow with one of us. Stay safe everyone!

(83 posts)As I posted on another thread, I can't decide if it's worse to live through the storm or worry about friends and family living through the storm.
I lived in Florida for 65 years and went through many hurricanes but I think it's worse to be so far away from those I love while it's happening.
I survived Wilma at my condo directly on the ocean in Highland Beach. Will never do that again! The worst part was not having power or water for almost 3 weeks.
Good luck to everyone - I feel your pain!

(39,343 posts)I've readied a mattress in case we need to dive under it in our huge shower stall (it's the most secure location in the house), I hope you won't need to, but that you have an emergency plan in the event that conditions suck.
Be safe

(42,769 posts)My old house was built in 1963 and it has weathered a few hurricanes. Plus, in Lakeland I'm about 120 feet above sea level and there are no water bodies nearby so that shouldn't be a concern. The one thing I might be a little anxious about is my roof is about 25 years old. I'll wait till the rainy season is over and get a new one. Probably early November. I wish the best of luck to everyone, hoping you all make it through this OK.
NightWatcher
(39,343 posts)Then we all get to complain about being without power into next week.
Be safe.

(5,935 posts)I'm in an area prone to flooding and in a place prone to wind damage. I'll be taking my mom, who lives by the bay in St. Pete and whose assisted living facility asked her to evacuate, to my daughter's north of Tampa. Right now, it doesn't look like we'll get too much damage, but Irma is a freaking monster and we are be prepared to head north and then west on mostly back roads should she aim for us.
My thoughts go out to all South Florida residents.

(39,343 posts)That is unless of course your guts have shit for brains, if that's the case I hope you've surrounded yourself with smart people.

(39,343 posts)It looks like you might be in for a ride. I hope that you're setup for the storm and it all goes well. Be sure to check back in after it passes to let us know things are groovy. I assume you'll be without power for a while, as will I, but try to get back with us. Check in if you need help, there's no telling who might be able to help out.

(6,609 posts)The path has been changing, now it's predicted to be west of us, close to Orlando, & down to Cat 3 when it gets here. Based on that we're planning to stay, as are several of our neighbors.

(39,343 posts)Like you, the latest news has them deciding to stay as of right now.

(6,609 posts)During Matthew we had sustained wind over 100 mph for an hour, with gusts to 115 mph & the only real damage was to old wood fences that blew over & one shingle tab came loose & flopped on the roof (I glued it back down).
If the most we're getting is 80-100 mph I'm staying put. I have a new 7,000 watt generator & plenty of gas, food, & water.
Best of luck to everyone! Stay safe!

Evac Zone C per the maps.
We've got a 5 acre orchard and we're going to stay put.
Shutters are up, generator and chainsaws are tested and gassed up
Everything that can blow around is either stowed or secured.
Not happy about it but options are limited.

(29,573 posts)Whew! One more warning (storm surge) to worry about, then we will go back to put stuff where it belongs with no power for who knows how long.
I was sure I left that house for the last time on Saturday.

(16,192 posts)hunkered down. Not too bad as yet. Am boarded up in a 1926 bungalow. 57 ft above sea level and my worry is for the large oak on the lot line coming down.
just made some comfort food that can be eaten hot or cold and have plenty of water and a generator.

(3,769 posts)I evacuated my elderly mother (plus a dog and two cats) to my home in Atlanta.
She is obviously anxious to get home.
I can't find any damage reports on line.
Power out? Streets clear?

(29,573 posts)Basically we lucked out. I am in a safe home in Clearwater, our house in Dunedin near the water survived another one. We had power here all night and still do. None at the house in Dunedin. Safety Harbor should be okay too.

(39,343 posts)I've been without power since midday yesterday and prob won't get it back for several days. Big portions of Jax are trashed or flooded.
Hope y'all are ok.

Y'all have a real mess down there.
I'm in Northeast Georgia. We are soggy and everything is covered with leaves and debris.

(39,343 posts)We just got ours back on two hours ago.
As far as the flooding goes, if you flood a little in a big rain, you flooded. If you never flood, you should be safe.

(21,597 posts)My aunt flew home yesterday. There was no power. So, she went to McDonalds for dinner. The power was on when she got home.
I'm happy to hear that the power crews are working so hard. I didn't realize that almost the whole city was without power.

(14,846 posts)Just southeast of Tampa. No damage at all. I slept through the whole thing. Power back on about 8:00 last night (after only 21 hours). Lucky me.

(39,343 posts)The sound was horrific. I can't wait to sleep tight with the AC blasting tonight in peace and quiet. Plus it's nice to have the security lights and cameras back up. We had people roaming some neighborhoods Monday night.
Glad you are great

(3,622 posts)Just about ready to put a picture of an FPL truck on the side of a milk carton...
Today a lone truck with two Canadians appeared surveying the area. Later a couple of debris removal trucks...
Bottom line, debris removal been going on since about 1600..they say they'll work till dusk.
FPL rep shows up and says they'll replace main pole tomorrow and we should get power back by tomorrow evening.
Otherwise ok...

(10,881 posts)....1920's beach house with too many trees for high winds, rode it out in my car parked on the down wind side of Tyrone Mall, tucked tight up to mall in a U shaped part of the mall between the food court and Dillard's, had zero wind or rain in my spot, was able to get out and take picture in the dry during the worst of it....my house on the other hand, carport down, front porch screen room gone, back deck canopy gone, TV antenna squished and down, 2 trees down, many branches down including one really big one balanced on my power line and roof, that was a fun one to chainsaw down...lol...on the other hand I have firewood for the next couple winters.
