State lawyers sue claiming sexism over wage disparity
Four women lawyers whose job is to hear and settle complaints brought before the state from condominium owners claim they earn 40-56 percent less than their male counterparts doing the same kind of work at other state agencies.
They claim they are being paid less because they are women and because they are misclassified as senior attorneys, not as hearing officers or arbitrators.
Were asking to be classified properly and then get commensurate salaries, said Leah Simms, one of the four plaintiffs in the suit against the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Department of Management Services.
Both departments deny the court has jurisdiction to hear their case. They also dispute the plaintiffs' central argument that their work is analogous to that of administrative hearing judges, judges of compensations claims and public employee relations commission hearing officers.
