At approximately 7 a.m. on Wednesday, a woman in her mid-60s ordered an iced coffee from the drive-thru at a St. Petersburg, Florida, Starbucks and offered to pay for a caramel macchiato ordered by the person behind her.
For the next 11 hours, nearly 400 customers followed suit, the Tampa Bay Times reports, "paying it forward" for the people behind them.
"It was a pleasant surprise," Melissa Garrand told Bay News 9. "Everybody likes their coffee paid for. So, it was nice."
When customers pulled up to the window to pick up their orders, they were informed that their drinks were already paid for and asked if they would return the favor. According to Grant Drain, 378 consecutive customers did, shattering the store's previous record of 141.
According to the Times, the chain was broken shortly after 6 p.m., when "customer No. 379 a woman in a white Jeep Commander pulled into the drive-through and ordered a regular coffee." When she was asked if she wanted to participate, she declined, "saying she just wanted to pay for her $2.25 drink and not someone else's.

(65,403 posts)is on a tight budget and decided to splurge just this once on a $2.25 plain Starbucks coffee, only to get stuck with an expensive order for someone--or even several someones!--in the next car?
And if you think there is no pressure, then look at the title of the article, and the fact that the article describes the woman's car and order. That is obviously meant to shame her and possibily get people to help identify her (which is what the article title hints should be done).

(2,467 posts)There is no way in hell that I would pay for a $10 plus order if I was getting a $2.25 drink.
And if i was her i would be reporting this starbucks to corporate for violating her privacy

(50,559 posts)I don't know how much pollution is caused by a long line of cars idling for many minutes on end, but it's gotta be substantial.
And I think I know what the woman in the white Jeep Commander is afraid of: the next customer in line being some selfish jackoff who orders a cafe au lait made out of a quart of espresso, a cup of sugar and a quart of whipping cream (that's the "toilette" size as in "what you should be sitting on while you drink this as it'll save time" while hoping the person behind him orders a small plain drip coffee.
