Anyone thinking of escaping?

Are you considering leaving Florida due to increasing intensity of hurricanes, storm surge flooding, salination of drinking water supply, red algae blooms, fish kill, erosion, other potential catastrophe changes due to climate change? If so, where would you like to move?

3. Nope. Hate the politics here and I moved from SoFla to central Fla to lessen the hurricane incidents

along with storm surge flooding (moved from 9' to 60' ASL) water is fine here, don't go near the alge bloom and fish kills when they happen. No erosion problems here. I like my new lesser expensive home, lower insurance rates and lower taxes. The sunshine is STILL disgustingly beautiful and winters are delish... YMMV works for me...

they want to leave because of DeSantis. They think he's as bad or worse than TFG. Can't stand his politics. They're looking into blue states that they can move to.

Since we feel the exact same way. Our hope is that he will be replaced in the next election so we will just have to wait and see. There might not be a way of escaping his Reign of Terror since he does have a chance at the presidency.

But no, I doubt we will ever leave Florida. We live inland so our risks are much less and that is a plus. The insane prices of renting, buying, taxes, Insurance, entertainment, Etc. Are not something we are fond of, but we love the warmth and the Sunshine and the Flora and Fauna. Florida is home.

9. Climate change affects everyone everywhere

And there are other natural events (fires, mudslides, tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes -- you get the picture) that also need consideration if one is thinking about moving somewhere else within the USA.

One alternative is to move to an in-state area where the threats may be less pronounced; coastal Florida is especially vulnerable, so a move to the central part of the state might be a preferred immediate solution.

We had a place in Sarasota for 30 years, and although we didn't have the routine street flooding problems other neighborhoods in the area experienced, nontheless the house was only 22 ft. above sea level. After selling that house we bought another further inland (about 25 miles from the coast) and more northerly in an area of rolling hills (yes, for those who don't know, Florida isn't completely flat as a pancake).

As do all Florida residents, we keep an eye on hurricane tracks during the season and hope we're far enough inland to not be impacted by any major storms, although Irma passed over the area (and Sarasota) the year before we bought -- and seeing the tremendous damage caused by Michael 60 miles inland from its landfall was quite sobering.

We personally like living in Florida, despite the political climate; one can get close to nature here (because nature will sometimes visit you in your living room), and spectacular sunsets are routine. That being said, we prefer life in California; the cultural and natural diversity makes us glad we have a second home there.

10. Climate Change

California is amazing but burning up and experiencing horrendous droughts, with water wars already in progress. Lakes at lowest level in history. Lots of people starting to move out of there. Believe I read it had a net loss for the first year ever. Those fires are scarier than any hurricanes.

I love Florida except for DeSatan and the Repugs. I live in Broward which is a blue county, but still Florida. I'm all in favor of inland Florida but can't convince my husband. We're 15 miles inland now and supposedly in a zero flood zone and have never flooded due to retaining lakes and canals (even though only 9 ft. above sea level), but when Ft. Lauderdale is under water from storm surge, it will affect the whole county. Although there are much higher elevations inland, as you said, Michael devastated 60 miles inland. What city do you live inland?

I'm definitely moving out of here after 33 years. Just don't know where. I'm from Pittsburgh which is on every list of "most climate safe places to live," but I am not a cold/snow fan. And as I age, I'm not enthusiastic about becoming a snow bird either. Don't want to have to travel.

I live near Ocala and it's red here, but there are pockets of Democrats and more are moving here. Stay and help turn the state blue. Bring your friends.

I live in a red county near Gainesville. My water is spring water, my property is rolling -- and now the first frost has turned the trees red and gold. The deer eat much of my garden most years, but they are fun to watch. In the summer there are plenty of rivers to enjoy and springs are everywhere. Now, if we could just get the politics right.

persuading my Democratic friends who are retired to move here.

Where am I going to go? I'm miserable in the cold weather and almost any state that's blue has cold weather. We need more Democrats here, not less.

15. Possible to get along in Florida

As a fifth-generation Floridian, have learned to get along with the newcomers. Stay to yourself, keep your mouth shut, and vote Democrat. Moved back here after living and working in Washinton, DC, and it's been rough dealing with how red the state has become. It's really a beautiful place, tho.

To those who want to leave because of DeSantis and other aspects of Florida politics:

Stay and fight, don't run away. The politics of our nation are more important than those of our state, and blue states don't need you because they're already blue.

22. I have plans to leave in the near future

I came here 4 years ago to care for my mother after my father passed. My mother passed recently so other than the family farm I have no ties to the State.

Reasons for leaving?

1) Climate. I find it too humid to work outside on the grove during the day

2) Hurricanes. Been through a couple in the short time I've been here. Wind damage takes for ever to get cleaned up and FPL never takes less than ten days to get the line back up. It took 20 days before I had power back. Liiving off a generator gets old quickly

3) Miami-Dade county. What to say? Traffic, litter, violent crime, general lawlessness, the Cuban Cartel, cost of living.(insurance quoted me was $8,600 per month)

4) Developers. What used to be a nice quiet farm is now surrounded on three sides by development. Speeding card, ATV's...you get the picture.

So...where to next?

Preferably somewhere arid. Back to Fort Worth but New Mexico and Nevada look promising too.

On edit: Tallahassee and the sh**show that it is. J used to think Austin was the corruption capital of America but have to give credit to Florida for giving Texas a run for its money.
