"Declare Emergency" climate activists blocked the tunnel at 12th and Constitution where traffic enters Washington DC during rush hour on Monday. The groups demands climate change be declared a national emergency and an end to fossil fuels.

One activist explains to me that she particularly feels strongly as well about divesting from animal agriculture.

"We gotta go to work!" an angry driver yelled, getting out of her car.

"I get being upset, but rationally - just take a picture and send it to your boss," an activist described.

Police arrived and began issuing warnings.

"We're profoundly sad about our ways of life being threatened by climate change," one activist holding a banner in front of traffic told me. "We have to be doing this, we have to change business as usual to get President Biden to declare a climate emergency."

After giving three warnings, only three of the climate activists remained in the road and were arrested. One officer threatened to add additional charges if the activist did not stand up on her own.

Traffic resumed after being blocked for roughly 20 minutes.

The three arrested activists were loaded into a wagon - officers said they'd be free in a few hours.

The group intends to do demonstrations for the full week ahead.

Officer John Felenchak of Special Operations Division (SOD) introduced himself to them.

...the group that this article writes about is called 'Declare Emergency'

Their website is https://www.declareemergency.org/

This is a statement from their website:

"Billions of people will starve to death in the coming decades, as elites fill our atmospheric “gas chamber” with fossil fuels for power and profit. Our food systems will break down. Billions will be forced out of their homes and countries. This means war, starvation, slaughter, and rape on a global scale. And the collapse is coming here, too.

The science is clear: the use of fossil fuels must end, immediately, if we hope to survive. Instead of leading the transition, our government gambles our future on unproven technologies and hopeful thinking… while quietly continuing to fund and faciliate the fossil fuel death project.

This is genocidal. This is criminal. This is insane.

We come together and offer resolute non-violent resistance to the fossil fuel madness of the present moment. We still have two to three years in which we can avert the worst consequences of the climate catastrophe.

What will you do in these two to three years?"
