Why last nights post-storm sunset was so darn beautiful (Photos)Capital Weather Gang
By Angela Fritz June 24 at 10:44 AM
As the heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds pushed out of the D.C. metro on Tuesday evening, the severe weather left behind a trail of undulating clouds that triggered an amazing sunset.
Sunsets tend to be most brilliant when theres clean air like the kind thats been washed of pollution by heavy rain and mid- or high-level clouds for the suns rays to bounce off of. Last night, instead of just one layer of clouds for the sunlight to reflect from, there were ragged low and mid-level clouds and above that a more uniform deck of altostratus.

(21,967 posts)2. Great pics
I was indoors but noticed a strong orange glow coming through the window, went outside and everything was cast in a bright orange light. It was a very impressive sight (after I'd gotten over my initial panic that John Boehner was lurking in my back yard).

The sky had an overall glow, but I don't get a unobscured view to the west.
