Unicorn Times and Quicksilver Times Digitized
DC Public Library's collections of the independent newspapers Unicorn Times and Quicksilver Times have been digitized and are now available in Dig DC. Together, these two publications are a rich resource for researching the political, cultural and musical underground of Washington, D.C. from 1970 to 1985.
The Quicksilver Times was an underground counterculture newspaper published in DC and covering leftist political, social, and economic news and culture from June 16, 1969 to August 1972. It was part of the Liberation News Service and the Underground Press Syndicate and published missives from radical organizations including the Weather Underground.
The Unicorn Times was a DC music and arts newspaper published from 1973 to 1985. Its coverage included music reviews, performer profiles, and news for local fans and artists. In early years, the paper's focus was primarily on folk, blues, bluegrass, and southern rock music, but expanded to emerging forms of rock including new wave and punk. Unicorn Times billed itself as "Washington's most complete entertainment calendar since 1973."
