Boulder voters could find tax on sugary drinks to their taste
Taxes on soda and other sugary drinks have been rejected on ballots in about 40 American cities and communities. In just one — Berkeley, Calif. — have voters approved such a tax, while the city council of Philadelphia passed the country's second-ever sugary drink tax on its own.
But if there's anywhere a plan so unpopular on ballots could be considered a good bet to pass, it might be Boulder; since 2003, voters here have been asked to approve a total of 21 tax-related measures, and 20 times, including the last 13, they've obliged.
Now, on Nov. 8, the city will decide whether to become the third to implement a sugary drink tax. Similar measures are also on ballots in the California cities of San Francisco and Oakland, and in the nearby East Bay town of Albany.
While Boulder is no stranger to taxes — the city's voted on at least one tax measure in nine consecutive elections — this one, which appears on ballots as question 2H, feels different.
