San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi released a video Thursday of a city police officer using a baton to strike a homeless man who had been sleeping on a bus — footage that Adachi said showed an unnecessary escalation and use of force.

The encounter, caught by Muni cameras, happened Feb. 11 at about 11 p.m. Officer Raymond Chu was responding to reports of a person sleeping on a bus that had reached the end of the line at Cabrillo and La Playa streets, according to the public defender’s office.

Chu is seen on the video trying to wake the man, identified by the public defender as 36-year-old Bernard Warren. After a disoriented Warren got to his feet, Chu put his hands on him as he stumbled from the back of the bus to the back doors....

In his police report, Chu wrote that he hit Warren in the legs five times before deploying pepper spray, according to the public defender’s office.
