Two San Jose police officers shot and killed a man allegedly armed with a knife Wednesday evening, authorities said.
The officers had been responding to reports of a man in a home that was not his on the 1300 block of Sherman Street when they encountered him outside, armed with a knife, around 5 p.m., said Sgt. Heather Randol, a police spokeswoman.
They ordered him to drop the knife, Randol said. He charged the officers, and they fired at him an unknown number of times, she said.
The man, whose name was not released Wednesday, was transported to a hospital, where he died.

(1,300 posts)I hope I never am threatened with a knife by a stranger whose state of mind I cannot judge. I have no training or experience in dealing with that sort of situation.
I would have to rely on my instincts as to how that person would behave, whatever dexterity I might be able to summon in a panicky situation, and innate survival skills.
If I had been trained for this sort of thing, both in the sense of assessing mind-state, level of threat, and how to limit overall damage, it ought to be quite different. I would probably be equipped with a good sturdy baton and skill to quite readily overcome all but the most adept martial-arts expert. I might well have a partner and thus have the subject outnumbered.
In sum, like ever so many such occurrences we are becoming increasingly aware of, way too many locked in to racial/cultural issues and really amounting to summary judgement, this resonates as either police insisting that their authority cannot be questioned or what at best is cowardice.

(41,833 posts)SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - In San Jose, a 911 call from a person inside a home asking for help ended with a young man being shot and killed by police.
Shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, police say officers arrived in front of a home on the 1300 block of Sherman Street. The caller said a man carrying a knife entered the home.
That person calling for help was inside a locked upstairs bedroom. Witnesses tell KTVU they heard a woman screaming and then gunshots.
"I was walking on my way over here and that's when I heard four shots," said Joshua Garcia, a neighbor who was at a nearby store.
"I was scared. I can't believe this," said Juanita Luna, who said she was visiting a relative nearby.
The gunshots came from two police officers who fired at a young man in front of the home. "That male charged at the officers. They ordered him to drop the weapon and fired from their duty weapons at him, striking him a least once," said Sgt. Heather Randol with the San Jose Police Department.
