How many times can San Francisco blow up this summer?
In "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," the city starts out in ruins, flattened by illness and economic collapse. Governance, such as it is, is only happening among a tribe of apes in Muir Woods. They come into the city to plunder the armory, climb all over the Golden Gate Bridge, and make things explode.
Then there's "Godzilla," where scientists decide that the way to save the world is by using warheads against monsters in San Francisco Bay. How convenient of them to decide to rendezvous near the Golden Gate Bridge for some photogenic destruction. That's far more believable than the human story of the movie, which involves a nice middle-class family who somehow managed to buy a beautiful home in San Francisco.

Hollywood used to love blowing up New York and Los Angeles. Now they can't stop wiping us from the map.

in which The City was the capital of Starfleet, and Spock put the Vulcan death grip on some jerk who was playing punk at maximum volume on Muni.

North California
South California
It would make sense.

(38,326 posts)5. I suspect it has to do with the availability of digital models.
Sets are always reused in Hollywood, from Wild West towns to any old brick building "Main Street" U.S.A..
It's the same with digital sets.
If you have a detailed digital model of the Golden Gate bridge you can knock it around in all sorts of ways.

(31,186 posts)6. I don't know, but it's destroyed again in the upcoming film "San Andreas"

The latest big-budget, action-disaster movie to hit the city is "San Andreas," named for California's infamous fault line and starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as a helicopter pilot fighting to save his daughter. The flick is expected to hit theaters next summer.
Large areas are covered in green screen material so CGI effects can be added later.

(793 posts)7. Well Folks...
I kind of think, it's kind of nice that perhaps maybe cretins and Teabaggers and RePUGs think that SF and the Bay Area is no longer a place to visit.
