Its a talk many African-American parents routinely have with their children, especially their boys. Be careful how you dress so people dont mistakenly think youre a thug. If a police officer stops you, keep your hands visible at all times. Know that if you drive an expensive car, some people will believe you stole it.
As the national conversation over the February killing of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla., continues, the case resonates with Inland African-Americans as a chilling reminder of the potential consequences of viewing young black males as suspects.
Authorities are investigating why George Zimmerman shot the unarmed Martin and whether his self-defense claim is credible. Protests in Florida and around the nation are calling for Zimmermans arrest.
When Cherilynne Hollowell and her husband heard about the killing, their 16-year-old sons face flashed in the Corona couples minds.
