Raul Ruiz, a Democratic emergency room doctor, eked out a victory over Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Palm Springs) in the race for the 36th Congressional District seat in the Coachella Valley.
The often-caustic political slugfest is the first defeat for Bono Mack in her 14-year political career, which began when she was elected to replace her husband, singer Sonny Bono, in Congress after his death in a skiing accident.
...
Bono Mack accused Ruiz of being a "radical" for taking part in a Native American protest of Thanksgiving when he was a Harvard medical student in the late 1990s.
Ruiz assailed Bono Mack for supporting the budget plan of GOP vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin; Ruiz said the plan would decimate Medicare. The political parties and outside groups spent more than $3.3 million in the race.

(22,271 posts)this last election (I'm extremely disappointed by not turning back the death penalty and not passing Frankenfood labeling). Mack was quite the whack job. Also, this is the first time I've actually seen our new Congresscritter-elect. What a little cutie pie (and I'm saying that in a very grandmotherly way).

(10,849 posts)would have done terrible damage, and 30 is a start to getting the one percent to pay their fair share.

(22,271 posts)And the supermajority in BOTH state houses is a real boon. I just worked REALLY hard on Prop. 37 for several weeks. Oh well, ya win some, ya lose some.

(10,849 posts)consciousness. Yes on 37 marched in our small town's parade and we kept hearing "What are GMOs?"

(78,249 posts)the No on 37 commercials were as full of malarkey as anything coming out of Mittwit's or Lyin' Ryan's pie hole. "Soy milk would have to be labeled, but dairy milk would not." Well, DUH! There's no such thing as GMO cow's milk (yet).

(2,574 posts)Bono Mack was so hideously ignorant, might have even called him a Commie for being in student/social demonstrations. She's that level of hater... you feel slimed after just listening to her. Both she and her most recent husband lost ...so happy bahbye to that Tea Bag Fun Couple.
Ruiz was so impressive in the debate. He's going to be a terrific representative for his constituents and a wonderful addition to the House Progressive Caucus.

GREAT news...and shows that we can take back America from these Tea Turd types!
I'm already looking forward to 2014 and getting tons of positions back to Dems...from local levels to the House.
Wonderful news.

(1,805 posts)I'm in this witch's district although miles away from Coachella Valley. Almost in San Diego County. Anyway, this was such welcome news. I NEVER thought she'd lose, as I voted against her time after time. It warmed the cockles of my heart (whatever THAT means) to see her husband, Connie Mack, lose as well. Good riddance to both!
