1. Hoax Facebook

Received a Facebook post. "Do not vote straight Democratic as your vote for President Obama will not be counted." Obviously a tactic to try to decrease down ticket Democratic votes as non straight ticket voters may neglect to vote Democratic in all partisan races.

3. Not a hoax, but it is poorly explained--and doesn't apply in CA

This is not an issue in California, which does not have the straight party vote option.

Some states allow a voter to vote a straight party ticket by marking a single box or oval for that option on the ballot. However, in at least one of these states--North Carolina--the straight ticket option includes all the downballot party candidates but does not include a vote for President and Vice President. In addition to selecting the straight ticket option, the NC voter must also mark the ballot to select a P/VP choice for that top ticket vote to be counted.

In addition, there have been some concerns about a straight party ticket ballot possibly being more suceptible to vote 'flipping,' There are different views on this, but you may run across advice that you not select the straight Democratic Party option in states that provide it. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't vote a straight Dem ticket; just that it may be better to vote your straight Dem ticket by marking your selections individually for each race rather than by selecting a single straight ticket option.

If you're voting in person on Election Day and you have a sample ballot that you've marked in advance to bring with you to your polling place, it doesn't take long to to vote by marking each individual race. If you don't have a sample ballot, you can print out the ballot recommendations of your state or county Democratic Party Committee to bring with you.

In L.A. County, for example, the county's Democratic Party Committee website has recommendations for every race, every state proposition, and every local ballot measure for every jurisdiction in the county:

4. I'm having to leave 2 blank.

The Congressional race is between a Republican and a "Democrat" who believes in fiscal responsibility, ridding government of waste, yada yada yada so he's basically a Republican running on the Democratic ticket. Even the local Democratic Party won't support him he's so right wing. He's also only been here for 5 years (originally from Silicon Valley area where he held some elective office). I'm leaving this one blank.

The other one is for State Assembly. Thanks to Open Primaries I can choose between a Republican and a Republican. One just as odious as the other.
