I'm 62 and my spouse is 59.
We do make within the 400% of Federal poverty level (barely) to qualify for ACA help with premiums via Covered California.
This year we had to choose a Bronze level HSA plan through Kaiser in order to afford the premiums even with help. The retail cost for this plan for us is at about $1,400 per month with $6,000 deductibles for each of us. We pay everything until we hit $6,000 each.
We found it cheaper to go to Scripps and pay cash. Scripps takes off 40% for cash pay.
What I am saying is the individual marketplace is broken and especially for our age group. Such a ripoff. Kaiser is getting over $1,400 per month, they pay nothing up to $6,000, so we can't afford to go there. This is basically a very expensive catastrophic plan.
The "affordable" part of the ACA has gotten unaffordable. I think in large part because Republican sabotage.

(23,002 posts)they pay no taxes, get refunds, and still think they can dictate what happens w tax dollars. They spent months and months poisoning the ACA. the biggest being that insurance companies can raise rates at will. What's the point? Supposed to be the AFFORDABLE healthcare act. A repub will tell you that at least you have "access" to other plans. (I suppose that means bc you can marvel at the best plans and then have to chose the one that hurts the least.)
They removed the individual mandate.
