Mary Bono Mack, Raul Ruiz debate spirals into personal attack slugfest

In a debate that was supposed to cover the most important issues facing the Coachella Valley and abroad — including Medicare, growing debt, national security and the Salton Sea — candidates vying for the 36th Congressional District instead focused on personal character attacks.

Rep. Mary Bono Mack immediately set the tone by using what was supposed to be an opening statement to lash out at her Democratic challenger, Dr. Raul Ruiz, describing him at one point as one of the “most far-left candidates to ever seek a Congressional office” and someone who made inflammatory, anti-American statements during protests while a college student.

“He led protests against the celebration of Thanksgiving, no joke … because he opposes what Thanksgiving stands for and what it represents,” Bono Mack said. “He even called for the smashing of Plymouth Rock, a symbol of American freedom
