Decades-old fears of reefer madness invoked on Thursday at the Planning Commission could not stop plans to open a pot shop in the Outer Sunset from moving forward.
Hundreds of neighbors argued that opening a medical marijuana dispensary on the corner of Noriega Street and 32nd Avenue would endanger children at nearby churches and a preschool.
A sheriffs deputy told the commission that an estimated 700 people were waiting to speak on the opening of the Apothecarium, a high-end medical marijuana chain co-owned by former Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and her husband, Dr. Floyd Huen.
A lot of people were told lies, Quan told commissioners. I would never do anything to hurt children.
Opponents in the crowd of mostly Asian seniors shouted the conservative refrain save the children, claimed the legal substance was a gateway drug and complained about its pungent stench.

(3,194 posts)I live in South Orange County. A city near me had medical dispensaries up until several years ago, when they decided to shut them all down, and make a law that they are banned from opening any new ones in the city.
Since then, there are no "medical" dispensaries anywhere south of Santa Ana. I just read that Huntington Beach is also trying to ban recreational shops from opening when pot becomes legal for sales next year. To compensate, there are 10's of delivery services in my area, but it's not the same. I prefer to see what I'm buying, and get some advice, which is hit or miss when ordering from a delivery only dispensary.
Of course, these cities banning pot sales, all have multiple liquor stores, because everyone knows that is a safe drug, and drinkers are far more responsible, and unlikely to get addicted. <sarcasm>
Pot will be legal, but many will still have to drive in order to find a shop. Fucking ridiculous.

(3,194 posts)You really don't get to see all their product in person, like you do at an actual storefront. You have to get their opinion over the phone, and then pretty much choose among what you ask them to bring, which is not their entire stock obviously. It feels more like some weird underground deal, whereas going to a store lends some legitimacy. Too many family "communities" and conservatives down by me, so I'm not sure that legalized weed in CA will make much difference for me. It will still be lots and lots of delivery services.

(7,886 posts)Many people with medical needs can't go places, or they are located in out of the way wares, or towns over. Delivery is a great solution for areas that don't want a storefront, and it's no different than any other delivery service. Is getting a pizza delivered to your door a shady operation?
