A top California Democrat has formed a powerful bromance with this local Republican

It’s hard to imagine their worlds being more different.

Anthony Rendon lives in Paramount, a small, densely populated urban community in Los Angeles County. Chad Mayes hails from Yucca Valley, a dusty desert town of ranch-style homes on Joshua Tree National Park’s doorstep.

Rendon wields enormous power in Sacramento, as Assembly speaker and leader of the majority Democratic Party. Mayes leads the minority Republicans in the Assembly, where not one of their votes is needed to pass legislation if the Democrats can agree on something.

“The lenses that we see the world from are different,” Mayes said recently by phone.
