Encinitas is the latest North County city to opt for a closer look at nuclear safety after hearing passionate pleas from community activists calling for greater scrutiny of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

Councilman Mark Muir said that there are pros and cons surrounding many nuclear issues but said he believed there was a common ground that requires a closer look.

"The common ground that we have is safety," Muir said.

On April 25, Solana Beach was the first San Diego County city to take a stand on San Onofre. After receiving presentations from concerned community members similar to the one presented in Encinitas Wednesday night, the Solana Beach City Council unanimously approved sending letters of concern to NRC chairman Gregory Jaczko and U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

When the Big One hits, the nukes are gonna blow. We know they are not built to survive it.

Note that the evacuation zone on that map includes San Diego and Los Angeles.
I'm sure they have a plan to evacuate those cities. Right.
Everyone is going to get in their cars and hit the freeways, or what's left of them.

Yeah, that'll work.
