Arizona leaders predict 'terribly damaging'effects from Mexico tariffs;Ducey cites national security

Arizona leaders in business and economics reacted to President Trump's Mexico tariff plan with harsh words, saying it could result in lost jobs, higher prices and rising business uncertainty.

The state's two U.S. senators criticized the president's plan while Republican Gov. Doug Ducey said he supported national security over commerce.

Arizona's proximity to Mexico as a border state puts it in jeopardy for job losses and other fallout if the country retaliates or if the higher prices slow international commerce.

"We're highly dependent on trade with Mexico here in Arizona," said Dennis Hoffman, an economics professor at Arizona State University. "Trade wars are wars, and (other countries) retaliate."
