OK we made it to Tucson

Here for a couple of weeks and then back on the road. But it feels great to be out of El Centro/Yuma. mrs. grantcart is signed up for LA fitness and will be there for a couple of hours a day so she's happy.

Weather is reasonable. And as the old Thai saying goes "the fields have rice and the water has fish".





After doing a little more market research we were able to put aside our original plan of spending an initial year in Yuma while we open up the market in Tucson and then move to Tucson.

We are now moving to Tucson in September. We will still be on the road 70% of the time, going to El Paso, and points South, as well as Yuma, El Centro and an occasional SD trip.

I took Mrs. grantcart on a short trip to Tucson and we knew immediately that it was much closer to who we are, and were surprised at how funky a place Tucson is. They have 3 Thai Buddhist Temples and a huge Asian supermarket. 6 LA Fitness. And it was much much much much cooler than Yuma.

Moving to Yuma in July

Seems like a pleasant enough time to go to Yuma.

What could go wrong?

Mrs. grantcart is a well known to be a very tolerant person.

Now we are going to test just how tolerant she is.

Unless you are military-connected AND living on base, Yuma is a very depressing place. It's hot as all get out and populated by the off-spring of people that California did not want, e.g., "Okies". I recently read a historical account where a California sheriff and posse stood siege to the only bridge connecting Yuma, Arizona to California. They literally threatened to shoot anyone attempting to cross going west.

Most recently I have been living temporarily in El Centro.

Yuma is a big step up from El Centro.

So while I understand what you are saying Yuma is a more modern, cleaner, urban place than where I am now.

Then again I have lived in some of the worlds greatest backwater locations, and had a ball.

I can survive anywhere and find it amusing.

Most likely I will be in Yuma for less than a year and end up in Tucson.

7. Yeah ...

Yuma is light-years ahead of El Centro ... a place that I refuse to stop in, even to gas up, as I am passing through.

But that said ... My only real beef with Yuma (beside the heat) is the general population's mind-set. Being a military town, unless you are on base, the residents tend to be vocally, and obnoxiously, teapartyish conservative with its very real racist manifestations.

I once knew a Director of a Social Service Agency (conseling those receiving public assistance) that was an ardent small government/end all entitlements fan. Ironically, when she lost her job, 4 years ago, she applied for public assistance before her U/C ran out ... and has been living on the public dole ever since. But what was so surprising to me was, when I raised this contradiction with others working in the social service field ... no one seemed to have a problem with her hypocrisy.

That said, I'm certain Tucson will welcome you ... we are in need of sane folks.

sounds like you already know the area a bit. There are some interesting places to explore around there, and of course you are close to the Gulf and Baja if you are inclined to do things like that.

one of these days all the desert rats are finally going to get motivated and do a meet-up - Tucson is the logical spot but if things worked for everybody we could do something out here I suppose (rough/dry camp situation) or perhaps Sonoita or Patagonia would be fun.
