Defense rests in Arpaio's trial; closing arguments July 6

PHOENIX — The defense for former Sheriff Joe Arpaio rested its case Thursday after former members of Arpaio’s immigration enforcement squad testified that they didn’t believe they did anything to prompt a judge to order an end to Arpaio’s immigration patrols that targeted immigrants.

Arpaio, the former six-term sheriff of metro Phoenix, didn’t take the stand in his trial for prolonging his patrols for 17 months after a judge in a racial profiling case ordered them to stop in 2011.

If convicted of misdemeanor contempt-of-court in the bench trial, the 85-year-old Arpaio could face up to six months in jail.

Closing arguments are set for July 6.
