4. How do I get an avatar that is not

5. not ignorant at all, and your picture worked just fine

unlike posting photos where you have to move them to a photo hosting site before you can post them here, avatars can be loaded directly to DU. BUT they have to be small and I can't remember exactly how to do that so my advice is to ask in meta - and you can be sure either somebody will have a link to a thread already posted OR you will get the answer directly. I have even seen people help with resizing things.
in the same place where you picked a DU avatar (my profile. edit avatar image) is a link to upload your own - click browse and find a file from your computer to up load.
