More than 40,362 Sandhill Cranes make their way to Southern Arizona

PHOENIX (KVOA) - They are back! Sandhill Cranes have made their yearly return to the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area in Southeast Arizona for the Winter.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department sent out a news release on the migration. According to the release, more than 40,362 migratory sandhill cranes now in the Sulphur Springs and Gila River valleys, well above five and ten year average, with 30,216 cranes, the largest group, at Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area near McNeal.
For the next few months viewers can observe these fascinating birds on a live-streaming camera installed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The live stream can be viewed at www.azgfd.gov/sandhillcranes.
The AZGFD said the cranes will begin to leave the wildlife area between late February and the middle of March. By April, all of the birds will be on their way to their northern nesting grounds, some as far away as Siberia, according to the Department.
