(1,945 posts)Thanks for posting the link. I did recognize 'Mrs Hughes', altho' I couldn't remember her real name. And when I scrolled down to 'Ethel' I yelled "yeow!" so loud, my husband came in to see what I was looking at. What a difference!
Downton is such a brilliant series, I dread when the season ends.

Critics are right -- the writer did race through the events. Seems like things go too quickly.
Next week is the last for this year.

(11,304 posts)good. Have you seen the first season where Mary has that Turkish man come to her room and he dies on her bed? Funny. Her momma and her ladies maid help her carry the body back to his room. Alot of what is happening to Mary in the second season is because of this incident and nothing happened. Your in for a treat. I can't wait til next year Shirley McClain is going to be in it.

(62,276 posts)I know it's supposed to be entertaining, but I just... can't truly enjoy it. I feel sorry for the servants, and I find the royalty to be rather repulsive.
The only people I really like are the socialist and the daughter that wants self-determination. But since they get hardly any screen time it's not really for me.
I'll keep watching, just to see how things wind up, but it's not like I eagerly looked forward to the next episode or whatever.

(2,185 posts)The whole set up is counterintuitive: class system?
Wealthy landowner with a flock of servants?
Yet, we fall under the spell of a system where many are served.
The Crawlys are benevolent dictators,
and the story lines are pure soap opera,
but very compelling, very well done, and gorgeous.
I love theatre, and this is major theatre,
the star being the fantastic Maggie Smith whose been given
the best zingers.
This is truly a marshmallow confection that draws us away from the
dregs of winter and political dreck.
It's all fantasy, the kudos to the writers and producers for giving
us something to take us away from reality.
I wouldn't want to live in that world,
of course I'd be down in the kitchen with the skullery maids,
but its addictive to stand on the sides and cheer the evil Thomas,
sob with the star crossed Bates and Anna,
and laugh at the clueless wealthy.
Anyone notice the evil media emperor trying to buy
respectability thru wedding a Crawly daugher?
The forebearer of Murdoch!
Did anyone see the SNL satire of Downton?

(29,098 posts)I have to admit..I'm so addicted and entranced by this show that I don't want to really think about these actors living in the "real world" ...so I think although I really hooted over this article I found it faintly disturbing.
