1. Very good

I just watched the first 3 episodes tonight, and it is really good. I had to avert my eyes a couple of times for the violence but I expected it and it is part of the story.

One of the things I especially like is the atmosphere as you called it. I had recently read an article that talked about how Tolkien had come from the West Midlands or the 'Black Country' as it was called. How the steel works and blast furnaces might have inspired his idea for Mordor. How the foundries and forges and soot made the cities like Birmingham look like they were on fire. Seeing this series and the background environment I immediately thought of the article, and could see what it was talking about. Really well done in that regard.

I know when I'm finished with the last 3 episodes I'm going to be sad to have to wait for the second season, assuming it will be made.

just as good as the first series. It takes place 2 years following the events of season 1. Thanks for the interesting bit about Tolkien.

Where did you find season 2? I'm not there yet, but good to know it's already made and no chance of the series ending with season one.

Thanks for the recommendation by the way!

We watched all of season one in a binge a few weeks ago. If you like this series, I suggest "Ripper Street"!

The casting is terrific. Cillian Murphy is sublime. Really do not like the soundtrack though; the music itself is good but as applied to the episodes is overwrought and intrusive. My two-centsworth.

On edit: By the 5th episode they've sorted out the soundtrack. The music has for the most part moved to background and augments scenes rather than drowning them out.

The lead actor is very compelling--hard to look away when he's onscreen.
