Survivor Cagayan - Episode 1 Discussion Thread - No Spoilers please on future episodes

Greetings fans of Survivor. Welcome back to another back-stabbing filled season of Survivor. In case there are any newbies seeign this, I try to do a discussion thread every Thursday. If anyone else beats me to it, or wants to do one, feel free. I like to get these together to talk about what happend. I do a little recap and throw in my thoughts and what I loved most about the episode.

The rules are easy, discussion threads are limited to only opinions about the castaways, the episode that aired or the clips about next week's show that aired after the episode. No spoilers that CBS has not already aired. If you know who wins or who goes out next, good for you, but many of us have no desire to know this, so please don't spoil it.

I enjoyed blood v. water, but am glad there are no returning players this season. While we have one sports celeb, so far ti does not bother me. best of all NO REDEMPTION ISLAND!!!

What we learned this week is that the Brawny tribe is really realy brawny, but has some smart people too. The beauty tribe has some cute boys and girls, but so far not any real good players, and the brain tribe has some of the dumbest players ever.

So, we get three tribes, all arriving as little groups. The brawny tribe trucks in, beauty arrives by boat and the nerds fly in. Probst tells each to pick a leader and then for that leader to pick the weakest member of the tribe. The beauties choose LJ as leader, the brawn go with a girl named Sarah who seems strong and smart while the nerds pick the oldest male, David, because he's wearing a blazer.

LJ picks Morgan, who is most likely to fall out of her bikini top this year. Trish is picked by Sarah, who was just standing up for her a moment ago. David gets the blessing of goign last, but makes a HUGE mistake right off the bat. He chooses Garrett, which might have been the best move, but then he actually tells the truth as to why. Garrett is by far the strongest ont heir tribe. David migh tbe right in trying to get him out first, but I would have covered it by saying, look, whatever he has to do against these two girls, he is smarter, faster and stronger than them. He is goign to win and return to us and this makes the tribe the strongest because it is the least likely way we will lose someone. Sadly, he showed he is not all that smart.

Of course the surprise is, those three get to go to camp early and get to make a choice about the game. What no one else knows is that the choice is, a second bag of rice or a clue for the idol. Garrett is already feeling bitter about picked, he wants a clue to the hidden immunity idol. He goes to the waterfall and finds it before the others even get to camp. Great move for him, he is sure to be a great player on this tribe. Well, maybe not.

When the brains arive, they start to work on their shelter. J'Tia the nuclear engineer and the self-proclaimed "smartest person" on the tribe is clearly not a shelter builder. It sucks. She has the ides, but it will never work. Not only was it a bad idea, but she is great at telling others what to do, but not great at workign herself. She is quickly hated.

Over on brawn, Cliff Robinson tells everyone his secret, that he is an NBA player. He forms a good bond with Woo, a martial arts teacher. Best play on fame ever. He did nto hide it, and everyone just took it in and moved on. Instead, the crazy lie comes from Tony who lies to fellow cop Sarah that he is not a cop. She recognizes that he's a cop, but he tells her he is a construction worker. Odd choice. Tony might be fun to watch, because batshit crazy is always fun.

On the hotties tribe, Morgan was picked because she loioks slutty, while the other two girls look cute. Wow, odd choice LJ. He never considered a male, which tells you where he will be putting his trust. Morgan who is not only hot, but also smart, takes the idol clue, but doesn't find it. Still, she tells them she decided to take rice and tools over comfort items for the good of the tribe. then the hotties start a fire without flint. Love when that happens. I am pulling for the hotties now, that Morgan looks great in her undies has nothing to do with it.

Double eviction tongiht, with two ICs. The first immunity challenge is CRAZY. They take a cart through an obstacle course to get keys to unlock three chests and take the chests full of puzzle pieces with them on the way, then take the cart apart, get it and the chests through a barrier. Once everything's through re-assemble the carts and get it and the chests to the end then solve a puzzle.

Cliff and his height give brawn a big advantage. The nerds suck. They are all acting without thinking of th eteam. Beauty does a great job and moves to the end with the jocks. The hotties even do the puzzle faster and win first. Brawn gets second, so its Brains to Tribal.

Garrett organizes a group to out David. Kass says the better one to oust first is J'Tia. Then Kass messes it all up. She tells J'Tia. Who does this. J'tia gets in a group with Garrett and Tasha, and now have three to oust David. Spencer is the needed 4th vote. He has no love for david though. At ribal, its clear its J'Tia in the crosshairs. But its not, David goes 4-2. Kass is on the outside. Bad move Kass. But now she is on th epower position since the girls want her on their side to vote out a boy and the boys want her with them to keep the tribe physically stronger.

There is some fighting at camp jock when Trish tells the AWESOME dread-locked Lindsey she is lazy. Sarah steps in and seems to settle it for now. I like Sarah. Then crazy tony tells us he is building a "spy shack" where he can listen to plans. He is a bit nuts.

At beauty is really all about Morgan's underwear and its fight to contain her boobs. That thign does not stand a chance. It really is all CBS plans to show us on that tribe, so I guess nothing else went on there.

For the second IC its a water event. The tribes have to swim to a bamboo cage, climb up and over the outside of the cage into the center of it. Then they have to dive down and untie knots to release a gate and move giant fish traps out of the cage and back to the beach. then its a puzzle. The prize, fishing gear and immunity.

J'Tia is a slow swimmer, so the Brains can't start till she gets to the cage. Does anyone help her, no of course not. Would have been better to have David there. I remember Tyson helping Gervase in the water last season. Good players see the big picture.

At first, it seems the nerds have this. They get the traps back to the beach without any help from J'Tia, but she is the puzzle master. The jocks get there second, but the nerds had a big lead. The hotties a terrible and can't move teh traps still out in the water.

Right away, its clear J'Tia is a bad choice. Despite the huge lead, she gets only one piece in first. Sarah is doing the puzzle for the jocks and rocks it. Hotties eventually get to the beach and J'Tia still has only one piece! What the F??!

Long story shirt, Sarah dominates. the hotties catch up and get second and J'Tia blows the whole lead and loses. She HAS to go, right?

Well, back at camp Garrett tries to play Rob and control the strategy talk. He wants an "open forum" and no side conversations. He says to vote J'Tia because she done messed up the challenge. What an idiot. Did he not see what happened with David. Tellign someone they are going is crazy. Tasha isn't happy either. So Tasha and Kass go off to talk. Garrett and Spencer come along and Garrett wants to preclude strategy talk. But leaving the girl you just told is going home was not smart. J'Tia goes nuts and dumps all of the tribe's rice in the fire.

At Tribal J'Tia admits to throwing the rice in the fire saying it was not her best moment. Tasha calls out Garrett and the "open forum." Kass aslo blames Garrett. Garrett then confirms that Kass is at the bottom of the alliance. Bad move. He is so dumb. So Garrett is blondsided and goes home, with the hidden idol back at camp. so, they kept the bad swimming, bad puzzle solving weak girl who sucks and camp and is crazy/ Good move nerds.

As a proud member of the nerd fraternity, I object to these people being nerds.

I enjoyed the heck out of this show!

You did a great summary so I won't even talk about any of that but some of the people? OMG this is going to be fun.

Tony, what the heck? Didn't he say something like he did not want people to know he was a cop because they would think he was more strategic and then he builds a spy shack that looks about as undetectable as putting up a Starbucks on the beach? LOL. I have officially named him "the Hermit Crab" in honor of crazy Phillip. Tony seems to carry everything about him in a very obvious "spy shell". I think he is going to be fun to watch if he lasts. Honestly, I thought I would be really into the brains tribe but I think at this early date that the brawn tribe is the most interesting and looks to be able to make it through the others.

The beauty tribe, ick. Did you love the comment at the very beginning made by Lindsey when she saw the women in the front of the boat and then watched them disembark? She was imagining cheesy music playing or something like that. I cracked up, I think she will be fun to watch if she lasts. Her little outburst worried me a bit. Back to the beauty tribe, I can't really add much to what you have said except that I totally agreed with Lindsey.

Brains. Hmmmm. It kinda reminds me of the tribe of Good Guys. They could not figure out how to use their talents together, not ever. I was so disappointed then as I am now. Also the criteria for choosing the brains seems a little odd. I wonder if Garrett ever wins at his high stakes poker? He must but with the strategy he was showing on Survivor I can't imagine. David was just kinda your typical board room guy or manager (I think that is his job for a team?) and could not play without acting like the boss who you had to please. Gone, good. I was all about getting rid of J'Tia after she screwed up the second challenge SO badly and the way she was acting and not working but then was listening to the others talk and being annoyed with Garrett I was thinking maybe he should go and then the rice incident. In the end I laughed and hooted when they blindsided Garrett. In the long run it will be better for the game and much more fun to watch. He was slow and lazy and not a player, at least not Survivor.

Without RI this looks to be a fun season and I am very happy about that. Thanks for your typically wonderful summary.

Looking forward to chattign this season. I like Lindsay too. She has the right mix of brains and strength, the issue might be her anger. I hope she can keep it under control. Sarah so far seems like the smartest player on that tribe, but we will see. I am amazed by the cop tony. He is flat out nuts. I think he has a lot of Phillip in him. I love the Hermit Crab name. Lets use that here all season, or at least as long as he lasts.

I think this is going to be a super fun season. Once you are out, good-bye, which is nice again. I was laughing when I realized it would be Garret. He is such a bad player. Bossy is never a good idea. You have to let everyone else make the decisions, just lead them into the decisions you want. He tried to use force, which never works.

I'm already rooting for the brawn team. I like that when Cliff hugs the group..he really HUGS the group. He's huuuge! His arms encircle everyone. He'd dwarf me and I'm 6'4".

The Brains will fail. I knew it immediately. If I can make a funny generalization here, allow me. Being Brawn or Beauty don't necessarily negate brains. But it seems the Brains kinda mean weaker physically. Not that their outta shape, just not as adept as the other 2 crews. I hope they find their strength.

The male cop is nuts. Gee, big surprise a cop is aggressive & a meathead. The female one is an early favorite in my mind. But that can change week to week. I like the older guy on the Beauty team, his name escapes me ATM. The NFL cheerleader is so stereotypical at first but I must admit to liking her idea if claiming she chose the supplies there. Quick thinking. Not sure if I woulda thought of that right away.

All in all a fun episode and I can't wait till next. Thanks for starting the thread.

I think the theme for this season will be the brawny and brainy people showing that they have a lot more of the other two qualities than you see at first glance. A smart strong person who is at least socially attractive, if going to win this, as they do every year. I don;t see any of the brains doing it yet, but we really only just met them, so I will wait a bit more. Great post. Lookinf forward to chatting about future episodes with you. Thanks.

Excellent summary as usual. The cop is dealing with some issues (imagine that - 'roids/shortman/small-something else and it will be fun to watch him implode. Kinda sad to see David leave, I think he could have gone far except for the amazing blindside, but the BEST blindside was Garrett. For a professional poker player he looked like a real dumbass....can you imagine not even taking the idol with you to TC just in case?

The Brains are in trouble with any future physical challenges, the Beauty's seems to be gelling much better, and the Brawn's will eventually rip each other apart...

And the best part? NO REDEMPTION ISLAND!!! When you're gone, you're GONE!!!

Looking forward to the rest of the season now...could be epic!

How's it going? It going to be a good seson. Thanks for the kind words. I think Tony the Cop (Hermit Crab as the suggested nickname in a prior post) is going to be the one to watch. He is nuts, nd that makes for good tv. David would have been a decent leader, but he just did not have any social game. He turned people off fast. Garrett was just a bad player. How do you not even take the idol with you? Its insane.

also, I agree 100%, the best part is NO REDEMPTION ISLAND!

Later.

I think we're going to get an interesting season. I feel like it's 'real' Survivor again--no returnees, no RI, etc. Just plain old Survivor, thank goodness.

I'm so glad Garrett is gone already. By the end of the first half I was calling him The Princess! After his little solo vignette in the flower patch whining about how he didn't come out there to starve and wow, like really survive! What a weenie! And the jumping around when the spider crawled on him made me laugh, just cuz he's supposed to be such a studly guy. (My husband hates spiders, so I know it can be awful for some people.) How did he ever get onto the brains tribe?? Maybe he acts as the bouncer at pro poker games, and neglected to say that he doesn't actually play poker.

Also agree that the Hermit Crab is wacky. I think he will flame out fairly soon. He seems WAY too cocky with all of his secret agent/king of the jungle dramatics. I see him shooting himself in the foot....unless he turns out to be so obnoxious that the others would want to take him to the end as the goat. I liked the way that Sarah (the other cop I think?) picked him out right away. She knows he's not telling her the truth. I think she should go far if the others don't see her as a threat too early.

And yes, the so called brains tribe should have their nerd credentials revoked! Geez, could they be any more embarrassing? If they don't go through Garrett's stuff when they get back to their camp, and end up finding the idol, they should all be sent home asap. Tesha might do ok if she can make it to a merge. Seems like she wants to play and so far isn't too out there.

I think it's a promising start to the season!

I am with you, thank goodnes no returnees or RI. Just plain ol' Survivor!!!

Garrett was like a Princess, wanting the world his way. But unlike ROb who mastered controlling the game, he just sounded like a bully. I have no idea why Survivor put him on the brains tribe.

Hermit Crab is nuts. He is going to carry this season. Sarah is going to be a solid player.

I wonder about the casting choices. Jeff has certainly been razzing the brainy team about their poor play. Lots of people like to do that to smart people. "For a smart guy, you sure are stupid!" We see it all the time.

Maybe they chose the brainy people based on their lack of social skills and physical abilities. Maybe there was something in their essays or interviews that made them deliberately poor choices. Maybe it was a calculated ratings decision.

But then, nerds have won in the past. One of them might come through. Look at Cochran. He is a Harvard Law grad, and a very nerdy looking and behaving guy. He won a million dollars, landed a job as a TV writer, and best of all, he has his dream: He is known by one name only, like Cher, Madonna, Hillary, Prince, Bono, Usher. COCHRAN!

I also agree that the people they picked for brains had significant flaws that they were chosen for.
