Matt Smith is departing the iconic role; his replacement is yet to be announced
The BBC is today announcing that Matt Smith is to leave Doctor Who after four incredible years on the hit BBC One show.
Matt first stepped into the TARDIS in 2010 and will leave the role at the end of this year after starring in the unmissable 50th Anniversary in November and regenerating in the Christmas Special.
During his time as the Doctor, Matt has reached over 30 million unique UK viewers and his incarnation has seen the show go truly global. He was also the first actor to be nominated for a BAFTA in the role.
Matt quickly won over fans to be voted Best Actor by Readers of Doctor Who Magazine for the 2010 season. He also received a nod for his first series at the National Television Awards, before winning the Most Popular Male Drama Performance award in 2012.

Not a bad Doctor but not as good as Tennant
The real question is... Who will the new Doctor be? Who would you like it to be?
Me... I'm thinking I'd like to see Idris Elba take over the TARDIS. It will never happen but I think he would be an awesome Doctor

But I am starting to tire of the frenetic Doctors.

(1,999 posts)It's shallow of me, but I can't look at his rectangular eyebrowless face without thinking of Dr. Frankenstein's creation, in spite of his very capable portrayal of The Doctor.

I agree with someone above that I would like one with a little more level head for a bit. I loved the quirkiness of Tennant and Smith does a good job, but it's time for a different vibe.

(21,756 posts)Looks like they are going to announce today and one of the finalists is...
"1. Domhnall Gleeson
Of the three, it is the red-haired Domhnall Gleeson whose name keeps popping up the most. The son of actor Brendan Gleeson, the younger Gleeson seems the most obvious choice of the three. Aside from paying off a long running joke about the Doctor's desperate desire to be a ginger, Gleeson has scored acclaim for his work in Joe Wright's recent "Anna Karenina".
He also starred as Bill Weasley in the last two "Harry Potter" films, had supporting roles in four very good films - "Dredd," "Never Let Me Go," "True Grit" and "Shadow Dancer," and has a leading role opposite Rachel McAdams in the upcoming "About Time"."

One of the other finalists, Daniel Kaluuya, is great in The Fades and would also make a fine Doctor... Can't wait to see

(8,692 posts)However, I am thoroughly enjoying this season- have two more episodes dvr'd. A large part of it though is Clara- the best companion of Smith's tenure.
No thoughts on a replacement though....

(3,746 posts)When Matt Smith announced last weekend that he would bow out as Doctor Who in the Christmas special, many fans hoped that the BBC would use the opportunity to replace him with a woman or a black actor.
They are, however, likely to be disappointed, as Mandrake can disclose that the role of the 12th Time Lord has been offered to Rory Kinnear.
He has been offered the part and we are waiting to hear if he will accept, says my man in the Tardis. He is the perfect choice.
The 35-year-old alumnus of St Pauls School, George Osbornes alma mater, is the son of Roy Kinnear, the celebrated actor.
He played the MI6 officer Bill Tanner in Skyfall and Quantum of Solace, the James Bond films, and won acclaim for his stage performances in productions of Othello, Mary Stuart and Hamlet.
