Should I invest in season 1 through season 5 of The Wire?

IE: The entire series on Amazon.

I'm pretty good at catching on to great shows--- but did not do this one.

I've heard many say it was a terrific series and well worth the watch.

Did you ever see the series Homicide????
That was by David Simon too.
simon did The Wire, and The Corner, and Treme.
I have them all, and I don't collect movies, as a rule.
But I do collect Simon's work.
He and John Wells/Aaron Sorkin are the best out there.

IMHO...
HBO allows the F word...
Each season of the Wire took a look at a system in Baltimore..
the cops were season 1
politics of City Hall was a season ( one of our DU members name is from the series)
School Sytem was a season..

Simon's series The Corner was VERY gritty, and could have been seen as a downer, since it was about drug dealing
but the characters were great, the actors just brilliant...
Simon has a group of actors he uses in each series, they are so very very fine.

If you liked Homicide you will like the Wire....I still watch Wire every year or 2.

and if you need any proof that the emmy voters have a hard time honoring performances by black actors, look no futher than the 0 emmys that Andre Braugher got for his unbelievable work on that show.

He subsequently moved on to a role on the television series Homicide: Life on the Street as Det. Frank Pembleton, a self-righteous, fiery, unyielding, Jesuit-educated police detective. Playing opposite Kyle Secor (who portrayed Det. Tim Bayliss), Braugher became the series' breakout star. He received Television Critics Association awards for individual achievement in drama in 1997 and 1998. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for best actor in a drama series in 1996 and 1998, winning in the latter year.

Plus:
In 2006, Braugher starred as Nick Atwater in the mini-series Thief for FX Networks, winning a second Emmy for his performance.
Plus
He has won an Obie for stage work and been nominated several times for other Emmys.

But I've heard the DVDs are faulty in the box set. I think there's a lot about that in the comments at Amazon. Catch it on HBO GO if you can.

On Demand was only offering up to Season 4 at the time
And just couldn't wait. Outstanding series. Hold it up there
With my all time favorites Carnivale, Sopranos, Breaking Bad
with The Wire being #2.

one of the best shows on tv. Gritty, great stories, good all the way around. Agree with what was said above. I liked Homicide and The Shield as well. This ranked right up there.

The enforcement here is extremely weak. I've been buying large drives to hoard stuff.
