Is anyone else watching "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" on Amazon streaming?

We're hooked on it. It's a series about a woman, recently abandoned by her husband, who becomes a comic in the late 1950's. We see her learning the ropes of the business, and there are parts that make us laugh and parts that really make us cringe. (Like when she bombs onstage.) Fascinated to see how comics think, why a joke works (or doesn't work). And Rachel Brosnahan is great in the lead role.

Just the thought of doing stand-up comedy makes my hands sweat.

Showtime's I'm Dying Up Here.

It's another snapshot in the past when Johnny Carson ruled, and comedy clubs and cable TV started up. Really good, Jim Carrey is a creator. You can even see his "character" developing in one of the comics.

Funny AND grim, really dark at times.

Season 2 starts in May.

Only a few hundred in the world can make money at them

But only a handful are really good at standup, in my opinion. Patton Oswald, for instance, is spectacularly smart, is a gifted comic actor, but doesn’t really make me laugh out loud in stand up.
Dave Chappelle seems the best now., Seinfeld, Chris Rock, maybe a few others are the only really good stand ups.

Of course Pryor, Robin Williams, George Carlin were better than anyone alive. Chappelle would be next for me.

and thought it was kind of a silly show, and since I was a serious teenager into serious science fiction at the time, I also thought it made a mockery of the genre. So, I was not a big fan of his.

However, when I went off the college in the mid 80s, somebody in my dorm had a copy of his Live at the Met performance from 1986. Not sure if the person bought an illegal copy, or if it was released on video tape for VCRs, but whatever it was, his performance blew me away - i was laughing so hard I had tears streaming from my eyes. it completely changed my views of him.

so, decided to binge watch it since it's only 8 episodes. Excellent show with a wonderful performance by Rachel Brosnahan in a completely different role than what she did in House of Cards. I think she's my new celebrity crush.

Spoilers below:

Loved some of the cameos from comics like Gilbert Gottfried, Wallace Shawn and Jane Lynch.

Lots of surprises as well - what's going on with Joel? Will Rachel's dad lose his dream job offer from Bell Labs? (loved that they had Muslim Tony Shalhoub playing the Jewish patriarch) Not sure how I feel about Lenny Bruce on the show?

Some of the scenes with Joel doing his standup made me wince, as did those times Miriam bombed.
