Here are the winners of the ORANGE photo contest!

I really loved hosting this contest in particular. My favorites in Orange really top those in all other contests. I also would have selected most of the same top ten, so it was very fun to see this close contest unfold.
Not so fun was choosing a winner between the two top ones that ended up tied, especially when I didnt formally vote in my own poll! This deserves an explanation. I was totally prepared to vote to break the tie between the top two, but someone else had stated that they were waiting to vote until the last minute, and I actually took that literally, and did not want to cancel that persons vote out and have a tie. So, I consciously waited as I saw the automatic (set by me) time run out on the poll. This was not a matter of my forgetting to check as time ran out. Therefore I am retroactively casting my vote for winner for Crossing Imogene by bluedigger.
By the way, I had forgotten who entered which photo at this point so the photographer didnt affect my decision in any way. As it turned out I didnt remember most of them! So I had my own unveiling at the end. That was fun.
Although I didnt want it to come to this tie breaker, I had to go with Crossing Imogene, because unlike many contests, I had some favorites from the beginning, which included Crossing Imogene, Time to Leave, and Venus Crossing the Sun.
Crossing ImogeneI didnt even know those colors were possible in mountain tops, and to have the orange so clearly stand out in the natural light was just amazing. To have half of the orange in light, and half in shadow just added to it. I thought that this was the best interpretation of the theme of the whole bunch. I really look for light in a photo, so this was a natural choice I would make. A photo with interesting lighting gets my attention over other photos. That is why I was attracted to Backlit as a theme for the other contest I hosted. I also want to see this place in person.
Time to LeaveBesides having a family member that is a fireman, I just felt so HOT (and frightened) when I saw this, and thought I want to know the story behind this. I also want to know how in the heck this photo was taken in the heat of the moment.
Venus Crossing the SunWhat is not to love about a perfect photo of an event that takes place every 234 years? This is the photo that makes me most envious! I will NEVER be able to catch this photo, nor will my children or grandchildren. Also, I like astrology (astronomy too!).
The second place photo, All that I Have, is just about as amazing. This photo made me stop and ponder, and it obviously equally moved the voters. The orange shopping cart is just ubiquitous, I guess because it is easily identified in parking lots and traffic. The very reason they exist is for us to fill them up with food or whatever during a periodic shopping trip. That such a commercial symbol is used by those to contain all the possessions is just really a profound statement about our society. I thought it was a great interpretation of the theme, second only to Crossing Imogene. I also loved the filtered light in that photo.
I hate stopping here because I have lots to say about other entries that are really amazing, both that made the finals and didnt.
I would not have gone into this mode at all had I felt I had been able to sneak my vote in before the end.
Sorry for being so longwinded. I only put the straightforward winners in GD with no editorializing, and will not direct them here unless someone noticed the tie and asks.

(15,812 posts)I loved your entry by the way. That's one of the very few entries where I actually remembered the photographer-- La Maisson Orange. I've been to New Orleans more times than I can count so that really put a smile on my face.
I was pretty happy with everything until the very end. Time was ticking and I decided not to vote, and just break the tie later if need be.
