Related: About this forumSo the dog wants to go for a walk. I know it's a losing battle so I leash up and we head out.
We run across a Milkweed gone to seed and it looks kinda interesting so, not having my camera with me (hey, it's a dog walk, ok?) I snip a head off and bring it back to the studio.
Looks like this:

It's got potential, so out come the tweezers to prep it and clean it up a bit. First pass does more damage than good.

Still there's some salvageable imagery.

And these things floating all over the studio . . .

Uh, and one last thing which I won't even comment on. Commentary is all up to you guys . . .

(34,119 posts)are incredible.
I should have taken a picture this morning at the barn. I found the chicory was covered with those little drifty parts of the milkweed. Milkweed hair? I used to know what that was called but darned old brain! I wish I had taken that picture, instead just like a 2 year old I blew them off to float through the breeze.

(34,119 posts)When I first started farming out here I knew nothing but I was told that the horses would not be well with the milkweed around. I tried to kill it all in their pastures. Then I discovered they never ate it at all and then I learned about the Monarchs. It is all over the place out here. I let the trees grow into small forests with the pastures in between and loads of all kinds of milkweed and wildflowers. My main problem this year is that I have seen no pollinators at all. Maybe one bee. My garden is suffering and even planting borage which is usually covered with bees has done nothing. I was told that having so much water around and so many dragonflies that they are eating my usual pollinators so now I am worried about when the Monarchs come through in the fall.
I keep trying to do the right things and I think I am somewhat successful but I think I will go outside and shake my garden plants because flowers and no squash is just stupid!!

(34,119 posts)You can barely hear a person talking at night, the frogs oh my the frogs from singing tree frogs to big, loud bullfrogs I LOVE them. Turtles of all kinds in and out of water, large water snakes that I see every day going across the big pond. Blacksnakes in the barn and I know they would eat bugs if there were not so many mice around. I do not have many ducks that stay on the pond. Not sure why but maybe because there are a lot of ponds around and probably more secluded. I have enormous bass, lots of crappie and huge catfish although I doubt the catfish eat them once they are out of the water. Working on it and trying to keep all the industrial waste out of here and that is getting hard as everyone wants to build on the large pastures around here. It is such a mess trying to keep things right but it is also interesting and fun. The bee thing is freaking me out. I thought about some hives but my husband was not at all happy about the thought of that. Still, maybe now he can change his mind? Lots of birds but I think they eat only a little of the dragonflies as I read in your article. It is a lifelong challenge and I have time left still........thank you!
