(130,964 posts)FAB, Peg!
Likely won't see moon here for WEEKS!
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,629 posts)I DID! It's actually simple. You just leave the shutter open for a minute or two.......it wasn't even hard to program.
I wish I'd realized it a long time ago. I just figured it would be way too complicated.
I'm sorry you won't see the moon for weeks.

(149,629 posts)The second photo is one I've never done before!
The earthshine one has always eluded me.......until tonight.

(17,298 posts)Was it timing that allowed you to catch it? Or special settings?
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,629 posts)Not sure what you mean by timing.
I had checked to see what time it would be close to setting and planned to be positioned to photograph it well before that. And that worked.
I had a flash of insight as to what would give me earthshine: a longer exposure than my normal. So I played with the metering circle on the camera and remembered which way turning it would give me a longer exposure. And that was it. Really quite simple, after all.

And you're very welcome.

(2,541 posts)Are wonderful. It is a great hobby. I love looking at the night sky in an old telescope I have. Looking at the stars and nebula of Orions Belt, The Pleiades, Andromeda as well as the planets in our system I love to do.
The Universe is fascinating to look at. The fact that you are looking far back in time in most cases because of the vast distances and what is actually going on is amazing. Many frustrating days at work have been melted away in evening by doing this. 🙂
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,629 posts)Somedays I wish I had a telescope..........but most of the time I like my portable camera.
When I was outside tonight for these photos, I was so absorbed in what I was doing that I forgot to be cold. It was in the 50's and quite windy.

I do have a son who is My Son the Astronomer. He's in a PhD program in astronomy at George Mason University, and he is my go-to guy for all my astronomy questions. What I love about him the most is that no matter how often I ask the same question, I have never once heard him roll his eyes at me. He is endlessly patient with me, and I appreciate it a lot.
I'm in Santa Fe, where I have remarkably clear skies.
Several years ago I attended the adult astronomy camp at the University of Arizona. Actually you spend a couple of hours at the University, mainly getting a tour of the mirror lab, then go off to Mt. Lemmon where there are many telescopes. The campers get to operate serious telescopes and it is one of the most amazing things I've ever done.
My Son the Astronomer did the teen astronomy camp there three times. Once for beginning camp, twice for advanced camp. When he came home from the first one, at some point I asked him what was the largest telescope he got to operate. "A 61 inch," he told me. That blew me away. And I got to operate the same telescope when I went. And here's the really cool part: that specific telescope was used to determine landing places for the Apollo missions.
Anyway, thank you again for all of your many wonderful photographs,.
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,629 posts)And a new telescope. Wow.
Plus the clear New Mexico skies.
Don't wait too long to set up your new scope! You will see wonderful things.
I love your story about the telescope you used being the same one that was used for the Apollo missions! Being near a piece of history can be life-changing.
As long as I can hold a camera and take photos, I will post them here.
