Please submit your ideas for a theme for the upcoming January photo contest.
I'm suggesting lighting, either natural or artificial.
I'll take suggestions for about a week and then start a poll if needed!

(22,380 posts)that we liked the idea of "light" for a theme. And then I saw something on the side of a building and pulled out my iphone and bingo
I may have my shot already.
Merry Christmas, and happy holidays to all from both of us spending time together in Raleigh.

(22,380 posts)I like it when a theme is a bit nebulous, and allows for different interpretations and whimsy. I realize you are saying sometimes the theme is not closely followed, but then, that could also be artistic interpretation, and after submission it's in the hands of the voters.

(42,770 posts)Pushing idea for years . But not necessarily as literal as doors and gates...any kind of portal however abstract.
For what it's worth ..doubt voters look at the theme...hence the prettiest vivid pic typically wins. Without a very specific theme that entrants are held to...it's impossible to even tell what the theme is just by looking at all of them. For instance a super simplistic theme example - say, dogs. It is then obvious to voters that the best dog picture wins. Whether it's abtract or realistic. How you interpret the dog is where the creativity comes in.
The opposite approach seems to be having a very loose theme that people find a pic to "fit"
