(19,459 posts)I was driving down to San Diego on Highway 138. I noticed the desert in front of me was assuming a warm pinkish/purple tone. Glanced in the rearview, and Bam! I wish I'd had time to swap the telephoto for the 11-16mm wide angle.

(19,459 posts)It was really impressive, out in the open desert. I just wish I'd had time to dig out the wide angle lens, as this covered the western horizon.

(19,459 posts)I HATE driving through L.A. . The whole stretch of I-5, from the southern base of the Grapevine to about Irvine, can be a real nightmare if you hit it at the wrong time (pretty much all day, from my experience). So, I get off at Gorman (about halfway over the pass) and loop around east through Lancaster and Palmdale (some pretty scrubby desert) then catch I-15 south to San Diego.
Taking this route leaves me in a much better mood when I get to my destination.

(31,405 posts)My brother told me it once took them four hours (double the time it should take) to get back from Santa Monica to Solana Beach when he
was going up there pre/post hip replacement surgery about five years ago. The 405 can be a real mess a lot of the time. Used to drive it a lot
when I lived in L.A. back in the '70's and '80's and even then it was starting to get congested much of the time.

(19,459 posts)...I hit the bottom of the Grapevine just as the afternoon commute was starting.
There were a couple of accidents along the way.
It to me 3 hours to make it to Irvine.
Heading south again this evening, but this time Im flying.
