(60,074 posts)Gigante was a local hero. He had just returned from the Mexico City Olympics where he finished 51th. That might not seem like a good result, but he wrecked once, had two flats, but still had a good result. He might have not won a medal, but he won a warm up race beforehand, and that caught the eye of an Italian pro team.
He was hired by the Italian team and became a big hit with the Eritrean/Ethiopian diaspora in Europe. They would show up at races where he competed. They wore their native clothes, and treated the race as a celebration. There was drumming and dancing.
This shot was at a Race after the olympics. What you see is Gigante being handed a peeled orange. BTW, he won by a huge margin.

(90,769 posts)Music-Fest. Downtown. Very crowded. Always one though. Someone shy, someone uncertain, someone scowling, and always someone willing to pose and preen when you turn a camera on those turning their cameras on others. No matter where you are in the world.
And for the most part, the crowd doesn't really care. Individuals, yes...but the crowd? Not so much.

Is it me here alone?

(11,795 posts)to visit Bolivia back in March, to see my students who were there on a service semester abroad project for Amizade. I loved every minute of Bolivia, but it really is another world. This photo is from a private preserve called Las cascadas, along the road from Santa Cruz to Samaipata. From the highest points in the area, you can see the difference in geography and vegetation as you look from the Andean cordillera over to the Amazonian lowlands.

(22,380 posts)I have internet for a day or so, and I like what I see with the contest developing and suspect I'll have a contribution
I'm in South Africa, I've seen and photographed things I hope to be showing you (no downloading til I get home)
I can't begin to tell you what all I am experiencing and seeing and taking pictures of. But if you bear with me, over time, there will be posts with tales and photos.
I think this is one of the two most exciting trips of my life and I hope to stay nice and safe and make it through the trip home (24 hours Johannesburg -
Washington) so I can maybe take apart segments of it and tell you about it if you like. My fortunate situation is that I'm traveling with and around supportive natives, that even can take me into places like the townships of Apartheid, the slums, the places Americans would call the projects, and one took me into the depth because she lives there and served me tea in her hut from boiled bottled water, where she bathes in a tub twice the size of a dishpan and has no toilet. Here, without being in those protective hands you don't have an assurance to come out alive. But I am in a situation where I'm able to see a segment without worry.
My measly perception of Apartheid, then and now, is undergoing a serious education process.
So - save me a space in the contest - and if not, expect to hear from me with travelogues maybe worth looking at.

(31,390 posts)If you have entered under the "no place like home" concept, please consider entering one from an adventure that blew you away.
Likewise, if you entered something from a wild adventure, please consider entering something that made you glad to be home.
It would be fun to have one photo of each concept from each photographer who has entered, but you aren't limited to that. If you have two of
adventures, go for it. If you have two of something that gives you the grins to live where you do, go for that.

(776 posts)Drove up and visited Astoria, OR a few months ago and watching the cargo ships come in and out really makes you appreciate how long those people are away from their families. I used to work on the road when my girls were younger and it killed me to be gone a week. Driving home would just stretch out forever. Definitely wasn't any better place then home when I finally pulled in the drive.
