Related: About this forumfinally got a decent shot of jupiter
This is taken with a small cheap telescope (5" celestron that i picked up used for $350)
i used a barlow lens that acts as a 2x teleconverter. in effect this was a 3000mm lens at f29 on a crop sensor.
i hooked my sony a6000 up to the scope and shot a short video (15 seconds)
then i used a program called lykenoes that takes the video, separates each frame into a separate images and combines the best one to help reduce atmospheric distortion

(31,390 posts)My dad was an amateur astronomer--a serious one who built an observatory everywhere we lived with a roof that would roll off--so he
could use his 12" reflector for viewing/photographing. I wish I still had some of the photos he took years ago.
When he was no longer able to go to Pine Hills (CA) from where he lived near the coast, he donated his 21" reflector to SDSU Mt. Laguna Associates.
In the summer the observatory is open for public viewing.

(5,113 posts)no need for a 12" scope . although i did get a really good shot of the orion nebula a couple of night ago. I dont have the patience for any real long exposure astrophotography. 20-30second exposures is about my limit (and my scopes limit)
