Thoughts on adopting bigger size limitations for pictures?

In looking at the current alphabet thread, there are some cool shots in there are would be better at a bigger size so that the details are not being crushed out of them as much. I certainly understand the need to not get carried away on file size due to bandwidth speeds, and it is nice not to need to scroll to see the image.

That said, any thoughts on bumping up the limits to 1000 pixels on the long side and 400 KB file size?

1. I would be in favor of raising the limit to 1024.

If you look at the current submissions, there are three photos at that length, which haven't been resized.

The first contest I hosted there was a big dust-up over how many submissions didn't follow the size rules.
Last contest, I leaned on folks to please resize, and ended up resizing a couple of photos myself--as host--
so that all the photos would be following the rules. I really don't want to do that again (if I ever have another winner).
It leaves the host in a tough spot. I think some people have dropped out of submitting photos because of it.

I do agree with you. I would much rather have my submission for the December contest at the 1024 size. But just
because several people haven't reduced theirs, I'm not going to submit mine at the larger size. I will follow the rules.

3. For my photo club, all photos need to be at or below 1024

so that is how I have been saving them. I think that for most people, this size would not be an issue with their computers.

the size limitations are only for the contest. Unless Skinner has size limitations elsewhere, you are more than welcome to post bigger photos in the threads. I just tended to stick with the limits everywhere and have no idea why.
As for the size limitations on contest. It was done for those with slower internet, to keep things equal and just to help it move for those that do look and vote. My suggestion there is to agree on a longest side number because it does help keep things a bit equal when viewing a line of photos. (And looks cleaner, neater.) As for bigger, no problem if people want to try polling on it again. Keep in mind the length and file size. If you go longer you might want to up the file size. ManiacJoe seems to have a pretty reasonable new size idea. (or 1024) If you want to start a poll go for it. Just keep it to 1 or 2 choices for your sanity.

Again, size limitation were ONLY for contest. Go bigger elsewhere if you want.

Might have to get on contest host to remind people. I don't think any of us like being bossy and so end up not being so good at imposing the limits.

7. IMO we should go even bigger than 1000 x 1000 (other photo forums are at 1280 x 1280)

I also don't feel a file size limit is necessary, limiting the dimensions to some reasonable size will ultimately lead to a usable file size.

And I'm glad to see positive feedback on this, in the past it's always gotten shot down.

either slower internet or smaller screens. That may happen again as more and more people use tablets and phones. But keep in mind, size limits are only for contest. I tend to have multiple windows open so like that I don't have to rearrange stuff to scroll through the contest threads. I have skipped rearranging on larger photos at times because I was doing too many other things. I would wait until after the holidays to post a poll. Give people time to see this, comment and all after the celebrations.
