After our hair-raising drive between Newport and Astoria, and our fancy dinner of chicken bakes from Costco, HullBoss decided to treat us by booking a seaside suite at the Holiday Inn. This was the view of the Astoria Bridge from our "living room."

I had a lovely 10 day vacation in Oregon/Portland/Astoria - magnificent drive along the coast line! In Astoria we stayed at the Cannery Pier Hotel/Spa - this link has a pic of our exact room, with a window seat with a view of the bridge. http://cannerypierhotel.com/acc_rooms.php
The trolley tour was fun. Have a great time.
OT - my investigative reporter son just returned from a 4 month stint in the Aleutians, including a great week spent in the Pribilof Islands. When he finished his assignment he took a week's R&R at Talkeetna. He'd spent 2 years reporting for KTOO in Juneau some years back, and welcomed a chance to return to Alaska, albeit for only 4 months. I will always treasure the time I spent visiting him in Juneau.
On edit: Check out Cape Disappointment Coast Guard station and lighthouse.
Also colocated with the station is the oldest lighthouse on the Northwest Coast of the United States, Cape Disappointment Light, marking the north side of the Columbia River Bar. Less than two miles (3 km) to the northwest is North Head Light, which provides a beacon for the northern approaches to the Columbia River Bar.

(46,436 posts)I'll remember for future reference. I loved Astoria. We walked around downtown for a while, and the Christmas lights and storefronts were so pretty. I'll probably post a few more pics later.
Your son got out of the Aleutians just in time. There was a major storm out there over the weekend. The news said Adak had sustained winds of 100 mph for over nine hours and there was considerable damage. The L48 doesn't always hear about hurricane-type situations in Alaska.
We might have to check out that maritime museum next time we're down that way. HullBoss was a marine engineer for 25 years and loves all things maritime.

(15,480 posts)After hearing him report from Dutch Harbor for 4 months, I feel a connection to that small community, so I do follow the weather reports there. They missed the worst of it, but further out, 50 ft. high waves and winds of 115 mph.

(1,241 posts)A friend who was painting on it called me to go to work. Sounds great so I beat feet for Oregon. First day I got there I went for a six pack of beer and walking home I stepped on a rock like a golf ball and broke my damned foot. Foot in a cast so I couldn't work but it was so nice I hung around and vacationed for about a month.
