Related: About this forumHow about some auroras?
The auroras were so bright on the night of the 17th that they were clearly visible even in downtown Fairbanks with the light pollution. We probably should have loaded up and gone out of town for the real show, but since I wasn't feeling 100%, we just stepped outside to the park across from our hotel and I got these.
This band above the Veterans Memorial Bridge stretched all the way across the sky directly overhead.
This is another band looking in the other direction.
I liked the symmetry of this aurora with the foobridge across the Chena River.

always love your photos of the "Northern Lights"

(46,436 posts)It picks up your GPS from your mobile device and then gives probabilities for your present location. The northern lights are kind of hit or miss in Anchorage, but they're almost always out in Fairbanks. It tends to fall right in the middle of that band.

(356 posts)never witnessed them 'in person' which has been a lifelong dream of mine. My wife has seen them many times when she belonged to a band that traveled to Canada throughout the '70s. Lucky her. I'm jealous.

(46,436 posts)especially if you can get out away from the light pollution. I saw some pics of this night that were taken out at some of the Yukon Quest checkpoints that were incredible. I've heard the mushers say that being out alone with just their dogs and the lights dancing overhead is an almost spiritual experience.
